There are a number of studies carried out on affirmations for health. Once study (Clayton R. Critcher and David Dunning) was able to show the link between self-affirmations and the reduction of stress on the body.
Another study (Koole et al., 1999; Wiesenfeld et al., 2001) also showed the link between affirmations and the ability to prevent overthinking and stress related symptoms on the body.
Using Affirmations for Improved Health
Affirmations are a powerful tool to help maintain a healthy mind and body, while also a way to help face more serious illnesses.
Often when we are told to improve our health, our immediate thought turns to a better diet or new exercise routine. While these are important factors that make up a large part of a healthy lifestyle, focusing on the mind is just as important.
How you think can have an impact on how you feel. This is what is known as a mind-body connection. An example of a mind-body connection would be when we are stressed about an everyday occurrence such as work, our body can react to this stress through headache, feeling lethargic, tightness in shoulders, or inability to sleep. So if we improve the way we think, we have a better chance of improving how our body feels.
We aren't suggesting that affirmations will stop the body from getting sick, and that they should replace prescribed medicine. However, affirmations could make up part of a health recovery plan, and can also help to prevent any stress related symptoms.
