How to stay consistent with your gratitude journal

The daily habits we keep shape our life, mood, work performance, and success at school. They help keep us motivated and on the right track. Gratitude journals are one of these habits. No matter how much positivity a gratitude journal brings into our lives, it’s easy to get sidetracked by things that add no value to our day. Remember, the more consistent you are with any daily practice, the more effortless it is to remember to do it. Here are some tips to help you write in your gratitude journal every day.

Set aside a specific time to be grateful

It’s said that it takes two months to make a daily habit automatic. After performing the same task every day, your mind will automatically seek out that activity. The most effective way to make a gratitude journal an automatic habit is to pair it with something you already do every day. Many people enjoy coffee first thing in the morning. If this is you, keep your gratitude journal in the kitchen by the coffee maker. When you make your coffee, grab your journal and jot down a few things.

Gratitude journal prompts

Remember when your elementary teacher would give you writing prompts in class? There’s a reason why. Writing prompts help spark creativity without the stress of figuring out what to write about. Gratitude journal writing prompts are no different. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • What makes/made you feel happy today?
  • Who are you grateful for in your life?
  • What helpful thing has someone done for you recently?
  • What three things are you grateful for today?
  • What do you love about your job?

Let go of how it “should be”

Sometimes perfection is more harmful than helpful. You may be avoiding your gratitude journal because you feel the need to keep your journal how it “should be” kept. Gratitude Journals are completely unique and completely yours. Set yourself free from this perfectionist mindset and enjoy the space in your gratitude journal that allows your ideas, thoughts, and personality to dance on the pages.

With these tips and consistent practice, you too can improve your life with the daily habit of keeping a gratitude journal!
